About Matthew
Hong Kong born pianist, Matt is an alumnus of the Royal Northern College of Music, where he obtained First-Class Bachelor's degree and a Master’s degree with Distinction. Throughout his tenure at the RNCM, he received tutelage from renowned pianists, including Ashley Wass, Frank Wibaut, and Jeremy Young.
Matt's remarkable talent has been showcased in masterclasses with world-renowned pianists such as Philippe Cassard, Stephen Hough, Jean-Efflam Bavouzet, Gabriela Montero, and Kathryn Stott. Aside from solo playing, Matt has earned his recognition as an in-demand collaborative pianist and chamber musician. Matt performs regularly with his twin brother, Jason, as a piano duo. Together, they won the Piano Duo Prize at RNCM as well as 3rd Prize at the 2019 Roma International Chopin Competition. Matt co-founded the Sande Duo in collaboration with cellist Jobine Siekman, with whom they recorded Piazzolla’s Le Grand Tango at Abbey Road Studios.
Proving himself to be a versatile pianist, Matt is also an aspiring orchestral pianist. Beyond his involvement in RNCM's orchestral projects, he has performed with orchestras such Nottingham Philharmonic, London Philharmonic Orchestral Foyle Future Firsts, Leeds Youth Orchestra.
Since 2022, Matt has returned to the RNCM as a Junior Fellow in Accompaniment and is kindly supported by the John Wilson Junior Fellowship in Piano Accompaniment.
